Climate change: Models ‘underplay plant CO2 absorption’

24 October 2014

There has been a lot of research carried out over recent years on how plants absorb CO2 and release oxygen and how this has a knock-on benefit on our environment and those who live within it. Some of these articles are summarised on our website.

Now, according to new research, it seems we have actually underestimated the amount of CO2 being absorbed by plants.

Scientists say that between 1901 and 2010, living things absorbed 16% more CO2 than previously thought.

Although it is thought that the new calculation is unlikely to make a difference to global warming predictions, it does give an even more compelling reason to introduce plants into your home or work environment: by combatting the build-up CO2 in our indoor air, indoor office plants can help us feel less listless and tired. So it would seem they are even more effective at keeping us alert and healthy than we thought.
