Our Plant in Focus for April is the genus Citrus.
Citrus is a common term and genus of flowering plants in the rue family, Rutaceae. Citrus is believed to have originated in the part of Southeast Asia bordered by Northeastern India, Burma and the Yunnan province of China.
This group of plants covers all lemons, oranges and other citrus fruits. We have chosen this plant for April as Citrus blossom starts to appear in April and has a wonderful smell. The fruits appear later in the year and are ready for picking in early winter. Feed regularly and especially during and after fruit production.
Health Fact: Citrus fruits are rich in compounds called flavonoids, which have anti-cancer properties. Citrus fruit flavonoids have been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and prevent the spread of tumours. They are high in vitamin C, and are a good source of folate and potassium.
Environment: When grown indoors, the ideal light would be high direct to high indirect light. They can be placed outside in the sun during the summer.
Care: The amount of water needed will depend on the quantity and quality of light the plant receives and if flowering or fruiting. If given the ideal light, keep plant moist but well-drained at all times.
