Our Plant in Focus for July is Sansevieria trifasciata.
Commonly known as ‘Mother-in-law’s Tongue’ and ‘Snake Plant’, it originates from Tropical West Africa and India. They are easy to look after and can tolerate some neglect, making them a great plant to have in the home whilst you are away on your summer holidays. They are resistant to most pests and therefore a good ‘starter’ plant for those new to having plants in the home or workplace. There are lots of different species, but Sanseveieria trifasciata is the most common. Greenish-white flowers can occasionally appear, which produce a honey-like substance. Feed monthly with a balanced water-soluble fertiliser throughout the growing season (March – October).
Health Fact: Sansevieria differ from most house plants as they removed carbon dioxide and produce oxygen at night, making them a perfect plant for the bedroom.
Environment: When grown indoors, the ideal light would be high direct to high indirect light. It will survive in medium light happily, but the growth rate will be reduced compared to high indirect light.
Care: The amount of water needed will depend on the quantity and quality of light the plant receives. If given the ideal light, keep plant dry to moist, allowing the plant to dry out between watering.
