Primula is a genus of herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennial flowering plants, which includes the familiar primrose and cowslip found on banks, pastures and verges. They form a rosette of tongue-shaped leaves, with many scented flowers appearing from the centre of the plant in early spring. They have been extensively cultivated and hybridised to create highly valued ornamental floral displays.
Primula are native to the temperate northern hemisphere, south into the tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and in temperate southern South America. Most of the know species are from the Himalayas.
Health Fact: There is no know research using Primula, but they certainly have a positive impact on our mental and physical wellbeing, reminding us about the onset of spring and longer days.
Environment: Primula benefit from being positioned in either a high indirect light or medium light position. They are a temperate plant so position in a window if using to add a touch of indoor colour during spring.
Plant Care: Primula like to be moist and tend to dry out quickly when brought indoors. So keep an eye on moisture levels and top up as required. Generally pest free when used in early spring.
