The Plant in Focus for May is Anthurium andreanum.
Commonly known as the ‘Flamingo Lily’ or ‘Painter’s Palette’ because of its large red, pink or white spathes, which start to appear from May until September. The Anthurium originates from the rain forests of tropical America, Colombia and Peru. They are susceptible to red spider mite, so keep an eye out for these on the underside of the leaves. Feed monthly with a water-soluble fertiliser that is higher in potassium than nitrogen and phosphorus, throughout the growing season (March – October).
Health Fact: Anthurium have a a good transpiration rate and therefore help to maintain humidity levels indoors at a range of 40 to 60 percent which is optimum for
humans and plants. While plants are keeping humidity levels down to prevent mold growth at the same time they are suppressing mold spores.
Environment: When used as an indoors plant, the ideal light would be high indirect light. It will survive in medium light, but the flowers will less prolific and will be shorter lived.
Care: The amount of water needed will depend on the quantity and quality of light the plant receives. If given the ideal light, keep plant moist, allowing the plant to dry a little between watering.
