Our Derbyshire branch have provided planting schemes at both of the Alton Towers Resort hotels, the Spa, Conference Centre and the water park at the Alton Towers Resort, following the success of the live and replica planting scheme they designed for the Alton Towers’ Secret Garden restaurant.
When selecting plants for the hotels, it was important to compliment the interior: The Alton Towers Hotel is based on fictional character Sir Algernon Alton, who was a keen collector of objects from around the world and this was reflected in the hotels’ décor, so an eclectic mix of plants and pots were used. Plants such as Kentia palms and Aspidistras were used, along with brass-finished planters on pedestals.
The conference suite had a similar look and pots were selected to match the colour and texture of the flying machine, suspended from the ceiling in the foyer. Pots on castors were also used in some parts, to allow the plants to be moved to suit the event.
The Splash Landings hotel has a Caribbean-themed décor, so a range of tropical plants including some large displays combining feature centre planting with brightly coloured underplanting were used. At the water park, we carried out a specialised maintenance programme, with constant reviews, as the plants are in a high-use area.
In the spa a more subtle and peaceful feel was required, as well as specimens which would withstand the harsh conditions of a spa, so here hardy plants were planted in Polystone pots.
