When multinational shopping centre developer Westfield came close to finishing its new centre in Derby, it started the search for an interior landscaper with the vision to create a dynamic scheme to compliment the smart new premises.
After a rigorous tender process and extensive consultation with Westfield and the centre’s architect, Urban Planters Derbyshire came up with a planting scheme to meet Westfield’s high standards and specific requirements.
The plants had to be the right height to create impact without blocking the eye lines to the surrounding shops. Furthermore, there had to be a sense of fluency throughout the scheme, using the same specimens throughout in complementing pots, but at the same time some variety was required to create interest.
The attention to detail even extended to spraying containers by the car park in the exact shade of each colour-coded levels, to help guide shoppers to their cars.
The scheme also included finishing touches such as bright flowering Guzmania in the baby changing areas and orchids in a glass bowl for the information desk.
It was important to us that the interior landscape in Westfield Derby represented the adaptability of the centre, from a shopping focus during the day to the cinema and dining offer into the evening. Urban Planters Derbyshire understood our needs and worked successfully with us to deliver the vision. They put forward an extensive variety of samples and we are delighted with the final product.

We have also taken living walls to a new dimension at the site: a row of columns situated outside the centre are now covered in dense foliage, using various grasses, mixed ferns, both variegated and green ivy, Pachysandra and purple Heuchera to create a mixture of shades of greens and reds.
The towers needed softening and we thought this would be an effective take on the increasingly popular living walls. We’re really pleased with the result: it’s a great focal point along London Road for shoppers walking by.
